Columbia University Women's Wrestling Club hosts first matches
More opportunities for girls and women means stronger, healthier societies. The more opportunities we create, the stronger we all become.
The excitement of being the first to do something good is always exciting. Such was the case when Columbia University Women’s Wrestling Club hosted their first-ever event, a collection of exhibition matches against wrestlers from Lehigh, New Jersey City, Princeton, and MIT this past Sunday, January 29, 2023 at Levien Gym on Columbia's campus. The event was sponsored by Wrestle Like a Girl.
There was a noticeable buzz amongst the wrestlers and attendees. Friends gathered in the stands and cheered on their classmates. Gifts were exchanged (a common practice during notable international dual events, but rare at the collegiate level). Luminaries from the history and growth of women’s wrestling came to celebrate the momentous occasion.
It was awesome.
Yesterday may have been National Girls & Women in Sports Day, but I choose to celebrate it every day. Here are a bunch more images from the event.

And below is a great video put together by this woman, Lori Ayers:
Lori co-founded D1 Women’s Wrestling, a website and social media presence which serves “as a resource for wrestlers, families, alumni, and fans to learn how to create and support women’s wrestling teams and clubs at NCAA Division 1 institutions.” It’s fantastic. They publish lots of useful info and insightful details while building support for women’s wrestling programs at the highest level.
